Welcome CAVA Families,

On behalf of the teachers and staff at California Virtual Academies, I am excited to welcome you and your children to the 2013 – 2014 school year.

As we begin our 12th year, California Virtual Academies will continue to diligently partner with parents and students to foster an atmosphere of academic excellence.  We believe this is best accomplished through child-centered instruction and decisions, mutual trust and respect, and clear communication.  We encourage families to fully participate in school-based decisions through opportunities like School Site Council, National Honor Society, and various online discussions and surveys throughout the school year.

We believe:

Community ~ As a community of learners, we are more than the sum of our parts.  Research shows that students who are connected to their school experience greater academic outcomes both in the short term, and in the long run.  Class Connect sessions, which are offered throughout the week, are a great way for students to get connected and stay connected.  Teachers also provide in person opportunities locally, so be sure to keep up to date on what is going on in your local area.

Achievement ~ California Virtual Academy exists for one reason, to provide an excellent educational opportunity for our students.  We combine highly qualified teachers, a first-class curriculum, and standards-based direct instruction, to help students reach their academic potential.

Variation ~ There is no “one right way” to do anything in life, and learning is an excellent example of this truth.  CAVA teachers have a wealth of knowledge to help parents and students discover new learning strategies.  It is our mission to help students discover a variety of ways to problem-solve, a life skill that will serve them for years to come.

Adults Matter ~ There is simply no way around it, the most significant indicator of how well children do in school is the support they receive from the adults (both parents and teachers) who surround them.  Discuss with your child the goals and expectations you both have for the school year and then work with your teacher to help articulate and refine these goals for your child.

We look forward to partnering with you this school year.

Sincerely,

April Warren
